With the posting of Part 3 of Case Morning Brightside, I've
introduced my first fully stated 65d NPC from my "Atrocity
Archive" game. She is found marooned in the wilderness in Iraq
and is rescued by the PCs. Is she a lost inncoent or something
more sinister? You'll just have read the article to find out...
Anna Leung - Freelance photojournalist on assignment with World Press Agency, Age 32
Notes Born in Vancouver, Canada, Anna was born to well off parents who owned a restaurant (The Ocean Dragon) that specialised in seafood. As the eldest of three daughters, Anna was expected to continue the business when she graduated from the neighbouring University of Seattle studying business studies. She however showed little aptitude for the business studies course she was on and switched to a photography course, much to her parents' disappointment. As a result she became driven to make a success of being a professional photographer - beginning with working for the university student newspaper1. After graduating Anna decided to travel the world and do a bit of photography at the same time. While in London she was able to exhibit many of her photo studies captured on her travels and caught the attention of an agent for WPA (World Press Association)2. She was commissioned to do a photo story of the plight of illegal immigrants in the city, which she enthusiastically tackled travelling abroad to see where various immigrants came from and how they travelled to the UK. The resulting story was greeted with critical acclaim and she hasn't stopped working since, travelling from one global hot spot to the next - often on her own, much to the worry of her parents and is now based in London. Of even more concern to her mother however is when is she going to settle down and get a good husband? In many ways Anna is very much like her mother, strong willed, confident, independently minded and determined to make her own way in the world. She has a cheerful and sunny side to her character, which allows her to inveigle her way into people's confidences and photograph their "best side". Her editors can't complain about the results, she always seems to manage to get the pictures they want3. She is currently in Iraq on the trail of a story that the British Army has been covering up their involvement in human rights abuses against the Kabiri hill tribes in southeastern Iraq4.
Footnotes: 1 Amongst the stories she reported on in 1995, Anna photographed an eccentric local dot com billionaire in Seattle notorious for his mania for privacy and refusal to be photographed. When the pictures were developed, she found out why - they showed nothing. The individual could not be photographed at all it seemed! Before she could publish, she received a visit from a government agency she later found was called the Black Chamber and was recruited (press ganged would be a more accurate description) into that organisation. 2 Travelling as a student backpacker/ tourist gave Anna a great deal of latitude to carry out observation assignments on behalf of the Black Chamber and learn more about her employers. Nonetheless, as a Canadian, she resented being forced to work to a US agenda and bided her time quietly. She now works as a professionally well-regarded photojournalist. In her capacity as an agent on behalf of the Black Chamber, she observed much of the work of the UK counterpart to the Black Chamber, the Laundry, including a flurry of activity relating to the disappearance and recovery of Dr. Dominique O'Brien in Amsterdam during 2001. (See "The Atrocity Archives" by Charles Stross.) 3 During the observation in Amsterdam, she was apprehended by Laundry security and "turned". She saw it as a way to get back at her "masters", by becoming a double agent - outwardly she is a loyal Black Chamber agent, but in reality she feeds them false intelligence and leaks information about Black Chamber ops to the Laundry when she can.
4 Anna's current
assignment is to act as a watch out for a Black Chamber recovery team currently
pillaging Site 1. The Masters of the
Black Chamber are keen to demonstrate that the UK cannot conduct secret
activities under their sphere of influence with out them knowing about it. If they want something so badly they won't
tell the US, then the US is going to have to take it off them without telling
them either! Anna has two concerns, 1)
that there may be a Black Chamber double agent in the UK Intel community in
Iraq and 2) that the recovery team have not reported in yet. The approaching Team Bravo may present an
opportunity for Anna to find out what happened to the recovery team - the trick
is, not to blow either of her covers in the process... Possessions:
