Ian Young's post on the WT Yahoo group (which is also now here on Project Nemesis) made me sit down and put the Fatal flaw I'd been kicking around to paper. As if being a Talent weren't trouble enough, now your own powers are out to kill you!

Custom Flaw: Fatal [-4/8/16]

Your power is slowly killing you. To keep track of the ravaging effects of your powers on your body, you (or the GM) will use a separate character silhouette to track the accumulation of damage caused use of the power.

When you use your miracle, any successful roll with a width greater than 2 causes a point of Shock damage on the separate silhouette. This damage never heals naturally. When the entire silhouette is full of Shock, the damage turns to Killing. The character dies when the entire silhouette is full of Killing damage.

When the silhouette is full of Shock damage, the GM should call for occasional Endurance checks. When failed, these checks indicate that the character is feeling the effects of the damage. “Whew! We beat Dr. Jurassic, but I kind of feel like throwing up now. Excuse me.” *hork*!

Once damage starts to become Killing, the player has some choices to make. He/she could place the point in an arm, or in the torso, or on a leg. The player can stave off some of the mechanical effects of the Killing damage by spreading it around this way, but it will catch up with the character eventually.

  • If all of the limbs are full of Killing, width of successful actions requiring Coordination are reduced by -1d, to a minimum of 2.
  • When the torso is full of Killing, width of successful actions requiring Body are reduced by -1d to a minimum of 2.
  • When the limbs and torso are full of Killing, the character suffers a flat penalty of -1d to both Body and Coordination. Let’s face it, at this point you are in the final stages of protracted illness.
  • If the head is full of Killing, Brains/Command/Cool are all at -1d. It is obvious by now that the end is near, and that is distracting you on a number of levels.

Note that the penalties are not cumulative with the Body/Coordination loss by Shock damage to your regular damage silhouette. The higher penalty simply takes precedence over the smaller one.

!IMPORTANT!: Casual use of the power does not inflict damage on the character.Only when the player rolls a match during a stressful situation (i.e. one in which there is a chance of failure) does the damage occur. This is an important point for GMs, as requiring rolls for every possible use of the power is going to shorten the character’s life considerably.

OPTIONS

Fighting off the Effects
If the GM allows it, you can prolong your life by burning Base Will. Every point of Base Will you burn will remove a point of Shock.

Altering the Lifespan
Also, to change the lifespan of characters with this flaw, you can change the ratio of Shock to Killing on the silhouette.

Shock to Killing Ratio

1:1 (Killing Only)

-5/10/20

2:1

-4/8/16

3:1

-2/4/8

Ticking Time-Bomb
Allowing the player to choose where the damage occurs simulates a character gradually wasting away from using the power.  If you want a more frightening and unpredictable flaw, make the character roll a random location to allocate damage. When a rolled location is already full of Shock damage, further damage becomes Killing. When a limb is already full of Killing, the damage moves to the torso. The character dies when either the brain or torso are full of Killing.
