Deep under the ocean an unusual breed of sea dwelling beings is believed to exist. Although no substantial proof of their existence has ever been found, there have been numerous reports of sightings, often associated with other peculiar goings on in many isolated seaside towns.

From those unfortunate enough to have witnessed one of these creatures, the Deep One is described as being half human and half fish in appearance. It is fixed in a perpetual crouch where the huge webbed claws of its elongated arms almost touch the floor. A line of shark-like fins stretches down its rear, running from the back of its large hunched-over head. Gills run along either side of the neck and large, bulbous eyes form the main features of its hideous starring face. Small, dagger-like teeth decorate the creature's mouth, and another smaller group of fins sweep backwards from its jaws.

The Deep One's complexion resembles that of an amphibian, with numerous dark green and brown slimy scales covering its entire body. Although adapted for life underwater, the Deep Ones are fully capable of movement on land. Normally exhibiting a peculiar hopping motion, sometimes on all fours, it is in this form that they are most commonly spotted.

Little is known of their history or culture, and most suggestions are purely speculation. However, many tales indicate they are a race of immortal creatures, in the sense that they never die of old age, only from accidental death. This characteristic is believed to instil within them a great respect and worship of their elders. There are rumours of such ancestors growing to unthinkable sizes over their eternal lifetimes, becoming almost like Gods to the lesser of their race.

Although much information that exists on the Deep Ones is based on eyewitness accounts, there has been some form of substantiation of these rumours from small fragments of writings found in stones deep beneath the sea. Translation of the glyphs has proved exceptionally difficult, but the conclusions drawn from them have been frightening. They imply that the creatures don't just inhabit the area around Innsmouth's coast, but they in fact reside in underwater cities all around the globe. Instead of just worshiping their elders, it is proposed that the mythical 'Cthulhu' is in fact their overall deity.

Perhaps, most terrifying of all, the glyphs also indicate that the creatures are aware of mankind. Normally, they are rarely concerned with making contact, but the writings suppose that if they ever engage in regular association with humans it would ignite the Deep Ones true desires to surface, bringing forth ideas of invasion and domination. I must reiterate once again that such ideas are purely hypotheses. If such suggestions were to become a reality… then… may God save us all.
