Edmund Rubinstein was most notable as the founder of Gruppe Rubin, the German network dedicated to cleaning up the Mythos taint inflicted on Germany by the Karotechia.

==Early Years==
Edmund was born in Essen, Germany in 1893. He was the son of a Jewish factory owner, and grew up in relative comfort in the Germany of Kaiser Wilhelm II. His father saw that he was educated in business and Jewish traditions, and he seemed to be following in his father's business.

Then, when he was 21, the Great War started, and Edmund got drafting into the Kaiser's army. He managed to get a post as a quartermaster in Düsseldorf, not far from his family. He spent the first few years there, far from battle. At the end of 1917, however, in preparation for the Spring Offensive, he was sent to the Western Front, where he experienced the full horror of trench warfare.

==Battles in the Trenches==
One night in the trenches, he was organizing some supplies when he heard something in the darkness. Curiosity overcame natural fear, and, with rifle in hand, he went to investigate. He discovered that the sounds had come from the tent where the bodies of the dead were kept. Thinking that he had discovered some thieves, he raised a cry and charged in firing.

Instead, he discovered a couple of ghouls feasting on the corpses. He shot struck one of them, but didn't kill it. Edmund was too shocked by the image of the ghouls meal and their inhuman appearance to do anything but watch them flee. By the time the other soldiers made it to the tent, the ghouls had long gone.

Unfortunately, that was only the beginning. Over the next few weeks, the Germans were attacked several times at night. Though they suffered some casualties, they also killed one of the beings. Eventually, their resistance proved too much for the ghouls, who stopped attacking them.

==Between the Wars==
Edmund examined the corpse of the ghoul before his companions burned it. He noted multiple bullet wounds and the odd body, marking it as clearly inhuman. It sparked his curiosity. After the war, when he wasn't helping to run his father's businesses, he began to do some research into what it might have been.

At first he thought that it might have been a vampire, but he eventual found evidence pointing in other directions. He got access to a copy of Unausprechlichen Kulten, where it talked about cults that promoted cannibalism among the aristocrats in pre-Revolutionary France. He began to focus his research into the region of France where he had battled those creatures at night, but found nothing more concrete. By the time this all had happened, tensions within Germany had built to the point that Edmund decided to escape with his family to England. He remained there for the duration of the war.
