Submitted for peer review in 1924, Professor Verraswami’s paper was roundly denounced by the scientific community and effectively finished the career of one of India’s leading chemists. Although the paper requires significant knowledge of chemistry and physics to appreciate, the salient points are as follows:

Experimental Demonstrations of Relativistic Co- Valency Relationships between Transition Metals and Rare Earth Elements.
Professor R. V. Verraswami PhD Dip Chem. FRS, 1924

Scientific Paper 600 pages, plus appendices, footnotes, references and bibliography
In English.

Verraswami postulated that the relationships between chemical elements needed to be reassessed in the light of Einstein’s theory of relativity and subsequent advances in physics.

In this paper Verraswami indicated that he could provide empirical proof that the rigid relationships between chemical elements as laid down in the Periodic table were no longer valid in a relativistic universe, and that by integrating factors such as time, gravity and velocity into equations for chemical reactions, not only could compounds long regarded as physical or chemical impossibilities be created, but that entirely new elements unknown in this universe could be discovered.

Verraswami’s paper provides detailed descriptions of experimental equipment, conditions and procedures, as well as detailed results he obtained in his laboratory. (Almost as a side note Verraswami provides an experimental method for achieving the alchemists dream of turning lead into gold.)

Verraswami’s most startling claim was that he had produced two hitherto unknown chemical elements –a metal and a Lanthanide or “Rare Earth”. Verraswami’s describes the metal as shiny, of a unique atomic structure; which caused the element to form itself naturally into spheres. The Lanthanide he claims to have created exhibited a crystalline structure of a long flat rod, flat grey in colour, and having malleable plastic characteristics.

Verraswami concludes his paper by outlining future experimental work in producing molecular compounds of these hitherto unknown elements

Peer review reports were scathing, and no scientist approached by Verraswami to provide repeat results could obtain the effects claimed in the paper.

Verraswami resigned his seat as head of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of New Delhi, and retired to his laboratory at his home in Darjeeling, where he died in an unexplained fire and explosion in February 1926.

Two copies of the paper are known to be extant – one is held at the University of New Delhi. The copy sent for peer review is retained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Study Time – The paper will be incomprehensible to a reader without a Chemistry or Physics skill higher than 85%. Even at this level 1D4 –1D6 month’s minimum study will be required. A further 1D6 months will be required to replicate the experiments described in the paper -and 6 x Successful Chemistry rolls in succession to achieve the results described by Verraswami – this representing 6 months experimental laboratory work. Failing any of these 6 rolls means the entire attempt must start from scratch.

Assuming the results are successful the two hitherto unknown elements will have been created. A further 3 x successful Chemistry rolls will result in the creation of the compound Verraswami postulated- the flat grey plastic rods and the shiny metal spheres will form a unique and hitherto unknown compound – a compound which will replicate itself, growing ever more complex in size and shape, forming a structure which the human mind will struggle to comprehend. (Of course if the Keeper is feeling so inclined the two elements may form the compound of their own accord, becoming animated and making their way across the laboratory to join and meld….)

Verraswami’s pure scientific research had led him to create the extra-terrene elements which make up the form of the Outer God. The compound once created will expand with devastating effect on witnesses to the experiment and their locality.Whether Verraswami’s research includes descriptions of how to neutralise, contain or destroy the new elements and the compound they create is up to the Keeper...perhaps a half burnt notebook was retrieved from the ruins of Verraswami’s laboratory…
