Here is a quick and dirty method to generate a typical investigator for the Call of Cthulhu setting.

Character Creation

  1. Determine what kind of character you want to play.
  2. Derive the stats of your character (Cost 2d per 1d in a stat above the base 1d)
  3. Determine Base Mental Stability (Sense + Mind + Command + Empathy / 4)
    • 1d - Insane
    • 2d - Instable
    • 3d - Stable (Average)
    • 4d - Very Stable
    • 5d - Extremely Stable
  • Add dice in the Equilibrium skill (at the cost of 2d per 1d) to balance out mental stability. Maximum of EQ is 3d (unless GM specifies otherwise).
  • 1d - Roll up a new character.
  • 2d - Keep another character on hot stand by, you'll need it.
  • 3d - Your character requires the facade to stay sane and can't deal with the horrific reality that lies beyond, opt for a deskjob.
  • 4d - You can deal with almost everything every day life throws at you.
  • 5d - Your mind is exceptionally resilient to traumatic experiences.
  • >= 6d - Go wake up Cthulhu maybe that will make you lose some sanity.

Step 4 - Choose your characters skills, baring in mind that how well you perform on a certain skill is based upon the total of Stat + Skil

Step 5 - Choose at least 2 hobby skills and spent at least a combined 5d in those skills.

Step 6 - Choose the traits for your character.

Step 7 - Based on your characters background (you did write one right ?) decide on the different failed and hardened notches. You get no bonus dice for these.

Step 8 - Determine your mythos skill. Your Mythos can never be higher then your Occult and the amount of failed notches in your Unnatural Gauge.

  •  A character which has 3d in Mythos will always have 3 failed notches in Unnatural, which can not be removed by any means other then by the GM). (If the Mythos skill decreases, the failed notches still have to be removed by therapy)

Step 9 - Check to make sure everything adds up to 60d
