Hyperstats with Flaws PDF Print E-mail

WT2_100I've been grappling with the use of Hyperstats in the designs for my characters. Particulary ones who have a ton of skills.

On the one hand, yeah it's cheaper to just up your base stats, but it can deform the character concept. Do i give my hyper archer a 6 corordination because it's cheaper, but now he should be able to dodge bullets? that bugs me. Similarly with hyperbody. I want a kick ass wrestler and martial artist/athlete, but beyond a certain point he does width in shock and killing with his bare hands, and can lift a truck. you've broken the concept.

But as it's setup it's not really cost effective to buy more than one or two dice in a skill, under most circumstances. you might as well buy the stat die. plus if you're playing a real skills monster like doc savage or something, you end paying hundreds of points to have every little thing in skills dice.

One way around this, where you don't have to spend a bundle on skills, is to go ahead and buy the stat dice, but add some flaws to the extra dice to define what they do better, and still get the effect you want. I came up with a few examples of how to do this, for the various stat/skill groups

Athletic prodigy: hyperbody +1d w/reducer level 1 ( 3/8/18 pts per level)
With this you get all the dice pool bonuses of a high body stat, but your lifting capacity, jumping distance, and running speed end up all being determined by your lower level body stat. you still might end up bumping your hand to hand damage into a higher bracket, but not necessarily.

Perfect moves: hypercoordination +1d w/ absolute concentration (2/4/8 pts per level )
This guy can potentially dodge bullets, or run across tight ropes carrying two people etc, but always has to make a cool+stabilty check as a mutliple action as well to do the really crazy stuff. so you're not spiderman, but more like a gymnast, a sniper or an acrobat, who needs to concentrate to do their thing.

Closer look: hypersense +1d w/slow level 1 ( 4/8/16 pts or less if you add more levels of sloweness)
Good for the detective types who need to study the area or pause to get information. so you can still have your 10d sense pool, but you're not daredevil. you'd notice the guy sneaking up on you, but maybe too late...

Erratic genius: hyperbrains +1d w/loopy ( 3/6/12 pts per level )
Basically when you use your hyperbrains you go into a day dream/fugue state and need a cool+stabilty check to snap out of it and do anything usefull. good for the mad scientists and shuts ins who don't funtion in society very well.

The last word: hypercommand +1d w/go last ( 3 pts per level )
Everyone else can run their mouths faster than you, but when you finally say something, everyone else shuts the hell up. the angry mob might run off before you think of something to say, though.

I need my sunglasses: hypercool +1d w/state of mind ( 3/6/12 pts per level)
Anyone ever watch csi miami, where the carusobot puts on his sunglasses right before the music kicks in for the credits? you need a certain something for your cool to kick in, but when it does, everyone better watch out. a good thing to combine with some of these others that need cool checks because of absolute concentration or whatnot.

All of these can be used for hyperskills too to bring the cost down, but they also emulate more specific apllications of hyperstats that offset the high cost of skills and can strenghten the character concept, rather than break it.
