Perceive [Universal] what can/can't you do? 2 Years, 5 Months ago
Hello, all.

I am running a Heroes-esque low-powered supers game based on 250pt characters. The players are part of a Special Powers Investigations Unit and each had to choose a police specialty and describe what special power their heroes had in one sentence. I then built the characters to suit their requests

One of my players, a detective, wanted the ability to perceive incredible amounts of detail on the people around her to the point where she could detect lies, mood, intoxication and the emotional states of people around her.

I put this together and I think ADRU 8d cost about 32 points. Her other stats and skills added up to about 150pts...

So I added the universal x2 multiplier to her power.

My take was that when the character activates her ability (which causes her eyes to glow green) she has effective omniscience within a particular area for whatever she is trying to percieve at that time. She can change her 'target' each round. She is also limited to looking for something that she can reasonably understand: moods - yes, IR - yes, spirits - yes, breaks in the subquantum fabric of the universe - no. If at some point she started studying quantum physics, however this would become a valid sense for her.

Does this make sense? Should I have done this? What do you think she should be able to do with the power? If not, what other powers could I use to make up the extra points?

Thanks!

I like this. It reminds me of the Cosmic Awareness power which Captain Marvel had. That's one source - also if you've watched "Perfume: Story of a Murderer" for an example of even just scent enhanced to a degree beyond normal human.

Also - just because she has the ability to perceive it, she also needs to be able to direct it.

Subplots

The Murder subplot: She hears a snippet of a conversation where a murder is discussed. When she tries to triangulate, the thought is gone. The discussion was in a passing car...so the murderer is still out there.

The Overflow subplot: how do you process *everything* when you have a migraine?

The Oneness subplot: Cosmic Awareness is less about knowing about everything going on in the cosmos and more about knowing one's place in the cosmos. She would therefore tend to trust her sense and instinct more than reason. Now, if a rogue telepath put 'feelings' in her head, she'd be more likely to trust them.

The Distraction Subplot: how do you stay focussed when everything is so interesting.

The Cosmic Guidance subplot: Slip the notes to the player when her character is about to cross a street telling her to stop. Pass her a note telling her that she needs to order pizza tonight. Pass her a note telling her to refuse to pay for the pizza. Reveal to her that the pizza guy had to return back to base with cold pizza, threw in the towel and went back to college. One day he'll do great things.
