These rubbings were among a small collection of Chinese language materials donated to the University Library at Berkeley, California in 1918 via the estate of a wealthy collector named Horace G. Chartier. They were stolen from the library within a year, and thier current whereabouts are unknown. They were made by applying a paste of wet paper over some sort of inscription in stone.

A cushioned stick was used to push the paper into the engravings, and black ink was then applied to the dried paper to leave white characters against a dark background. The rubbings were crudely hand-bound between covers of sturdy, pale yellow cardstock bearing the following hand-written text in English: "Inscriptions from the Mei Wu Cliff Face, Diquing Plateau".

A careful drawing from an oblique, overhead perspective has been bound in atop the engravings. It shows a formidable but partially collapsed structure labelled "Mei Wu Monestary" in both English and Cantonese. Cliff faces appear to surround the structure on three sides, some looming above it and others dropping away below it. Unfortunately, the booklet does not provide enough information to deduce the exact location of the ruined monestary or the original cliff-side engravings. Judging by the cover, they are located somewhere on the Diquing plateau in China's Yunnan province. However, "Mei Wu" ("Demon Mist") does not appear on any map.

These rubbings appear to record a dull and lengthy tract on meditation, though an experienced eye might notice elements from the litany of Yeb and the dreadful Lau-Isar scriptures. In fact these rubbing record the spell, Journey to the Other Side. In addition to the usual effects of that spell, the sorcerer might experience visions providing tantalizing clues to the location of the ruined monestary and whatever additional secrets it may hold.
