These rubbings were among a small collection of Chinese language materials donated to the University Library at Berkeley, California in 1918 via the estate of a wealthy collector named Horace G. Chartier. They were stolen from the library within a year, and thier current whereabouts are unknown. They were made by applying a paste of wet paper over some sort of inscription in stone. A cushioned stick was used to push the paper into the engravings, and black ink was then applied to the dried paper to leave white characters against a dark background. The rubbings were crudely hand-bound between covers of sturdy, pale yellow cardstock bearing the following hand-written text in English: "Inscriptions from the Mei Wu Cliff Face, Diquing Plateau".
