Project Nemesis is a fan driven website for games that use the One-Roll Engine (like Nemesis, Wild Talents, Reign and Monsters) or Chaosium's Basic Roleplay System (BRP) (like Call of Cthulhu) and the Delta Green setting.
We do know that the Mi-Go possess a polymorphous neurology. At any given time, a certain percentage of the Mi-Go is transubstantiated into what amounts to brain matter. This peculiarity of their biology causes the Mi-Go to think in extremely complex logical chains, processing multiple lines of deduction at once.
They are effectively incapable of induction, epiphany or intuition of any sort. This deficit is the primary reason the Space Devils seek to exploit humanity. Furthermore, their mode of thinking is coupled with a self-editing memory that discards seemingly unimportant details. It is as if the Mi-Go existed in a state of hypnotic savant functioning coupled with a constant state of brainwashing. Experiments have shown that it is possible to duplicate this high-computational state in human subjects. The emotional functioning of the subjects seemed relatively unaffected when the experiment ended.
Our science does show seven basic modes of behavior that the Mi-Go seem to follow in stressful situations. The first three seem to be purely instinctual, while the remaining four appear to be learned behaviors and are theorized to be somehow programmed or trained into larval Mi-Go. The seven modes are: Instinctual Flight, Instinctual Fight, Instinctual Freeze, Logic Fugue, Counter Stimulus, Preconditioned Response, and Spiritual Epiphany.
Instinctual Responses in the Mi-Go are most commonly seen in the obsolecent and near-extinct Worker Caste. These are simple fight, flight or freeze modes of behavior. A fighting Mi-Go enters a nearly berserk state, but will withdraw if seriously injured. Certain Kirlian aura patterns can trigger these responses to some degree, including the "distress call" of threatened Mi-Go larvae, which trigger an insane frenzy in adult Mi-Go, who will then fight to the death. Experiments to trigger flight or freeze instinctual responses with aura projection experts have met with limited success.
The Mi-Go Logic Fugue is a trance-like state of mind wherein the Mi-Go is perceiving multiple probabilities at once. Multiple parallel realities converge in hypergeometry until one emerges to the Mi-Go's liking. This mode of thought can be easily confused with an Instinctual Freeze, and may have developed from it. This mode is most frequently seen in the Scientist Caste. This state can be interrupted by Instinctual modes which then serve as a form of autopilot until the dimensional convergence can be perceived. The Mi-Go's external sensory input and memories are largely disconnected during a Logic Fugue.
In a Counter-Stimulus mode, the Mi-Go will take steps to neutralize any perceived threat by a form of metaphorical mirroring, or reflective behavior. For example, a Mi-Go under fire might enter this mode of thought and either take cover, grow a bio-armor web, or use some device or technique to become intangible in the four Space/Time dimensions. Rarely will the Counter-Stimulus result in offensive action being taken. This response mode is most commonly seen in scientists or workers engaged in some repetative task and is almost never seen in the warrior caste.
Mi-Go are also capable of storing pre-programmed behavior routines, or Preconditioned Response Modes. We believe that these modes are designed by the Scientist caste for use by Infiltrators, Warriors and Workers. Almost any desired behavior can be set and adjusted as needed. Our database currently lists over 10,000 suspected Mi-Go presets and the Kirlian burst flashes which trigger them. Preconditioned responses are most likely transferred by cloning polymorphous neural tissue which is then digested using the Mi-Go's natural Mnemophagia or "memory cannibalism."
The most dangerous and unpredictable mode of thought that the Mi-Go are capable of is Spiritual Epiphany. Mi-Go with strong connections to Outer Gods might spontaneously erupt into pseudo-mystical behavior tied to Shub-Niggurath, Nyarlathotep or Hastur. Epiphany is especially common in areas sacred to Shub-Niggurath, infected with the surreal corruption of Hastur, or in the presence of large numbers of Gof'nn Hupadgh, Innominada or others "chosen" by the gods. This mode is an exemption to the rule that Mi-Go do not have intuition, as it is the direct result of an Entity broadcasting it's presence into our reality using the Mi-Go as a biological antenna or transmitter.
A Mi-Go Spiritual Epiphany is a terrible warping of reality. Servitor creatures such as Dark Young, Byakhee or Hunting Horrors may spontaneously arrive without being summoned. They would be drawn to the opening of the ways instead of responding to a ritual call as is most often the case. Bizarre otherworldly radiations may emanate from the Mi-Go's Kirlian Aura, similar in nature to that produced by Tillinghast Resonators. Dimensional seepage may occur, endangering those unfamiliar with hypergeometry. It is even conceivable that Outer Gods may partially or even fully manifest if the Epiphany continues for any prolonged period.
In rapidly changing chaotic circumstances such as combat, the Mi-Go may establish a sort of Heirarchical Networking. one or more "Operant" Mi-Go will enter Logic Fugues and command other "Function" Mi-Go. Often these commands will take the form of hypnotic burst flashes of their Kirlian Auras triggering Preconditioned Responses. If the situation escalates out of control, the Mi-Go will often withdraw and enter a Hive-Fugue, sharing the intellectual resources of their polymorphous neurology both biologically and psionically to maximize processing power and produce a new series of command presets. This process could take less than a minute to implement.
The Operant-Function heirarchy could lead to hard-pressed Mi-Go withdrawing from a chaotic situation despite any temporary advantage they might hold, only to suddenly return to a critical situation with a significant tactical improvent and intensified clarity of purpose. There are no doubt many other modes, variants of modes, and Hierarchical Networks that have yet to be discovered.
