Project Nemesis is a fan driven website for games that use the One-Roll Engine (like Nemesis, Wild Talents, Reign and Monsters) or Chaosium's Basic Roleplay System (BRP) (like Call of Cthulhu) and the Delta Green setting.
First draft of a One-Roll "what happens in the character´s world" table. Intended for Reigns Company rules, but maybe usefull elsewhere?
Departing from standard One-Roll generation tables, it seems better to make events applicable for all companies, and have the GM roll 1d10 to find what company is affected:
A GM needs to make his/ her own version of this table, suitable for the individual campaign.
Groups/Companies affected by event:
1: Royalty/ senators.
2 Clergy/ occult circles.
3 Military/navy.
4 Merchants.
5 Underworld.
6 Outside factions (neighbouring nations, rebels, foreign trade guilds).
7 The poor.
8 Roll twice. The event affects two groups, somehow.
9 A PC´s own company.
0 This happens to a PC personally, or to a NPC important to a PC.
In fact i would even suggest making larger tables, numbering 3-30 or so, allowing for listing individuals and smaller groups.
THE EVENTS:
This turned out pretty generic, since i did´nt want to to tie it too closely to Heluso and Milonda or other settings. That makes it feel bland..
Also, i absolutely suck at crunch. It is a fact i have come to accept after many years of heartbreak. So, if anyone wants to add specific numbers and modifiers to events.. go crazy.
Most all of these sets should be considered “events about to happen” so PCs can react..
Also consider that these events, since they are happening at the same time, will affect each other; 2x3 and 4x0 is likely to be remembered as “The Dukes´ tornado wedding”.
SEASON EVENTS
SETS 1: HEALTH
2x1 An important individual is taken ill. Is a reclusive healer or a rare herb needed ?
3x1 An important individual is dying of an illness, threatening to spark a succession war.
4x1 An infectious disease threatens to ravage a Company.
5x1 Epidemic ! A serious epidemic threatens the dutchy ! Can everyone cooperate ?
2: RICHES.
2x2 Somebody is in position to reap an enconomic windfall.
3x2 A Company might lose an important asset due to money problems.
4x2 Two companies are in direct conflict over an economic prize.
5x2 An opportunity to grab another company´s economic base arises.
3: LOVE
2x3 An important marriage is coming up. Should it be disrupted,prestige would be lost..
3x3 Marriage of two well-known figures will lessen animosity between two companies. 4x3 A major figure in a company is in love with someone the Company finds unacceptable.
5x3 Love makes a major figure in a Company vulnerable, either for treason or blackmail.
4: AMBITION
2x4 An unimaginative minor figure of a company will make a clumsy attempt to rise.
3x4 A major figure in a company makes an ill-judged alliance or decision out of ambition.
4x4 A company overextends its resources in a gamble to grab some advantage.
5x4 A Major Figure strikes! A plot to seize or destroy some important resource is set in motion. if successful, the Major Figure will become immensely powerful.
5: REMORSE
2x5 Someone regrets a deal or an arrangement already entered into and wants out.
3x5 Company plebs feel the leadership has wronged someone, internally or externally. A demand to redress this injustice grows in the ranks.
4x5 The loss of some minor figure or item causes the company rank and file to feel they have lost their way- the leadership will eventually face a demand to change some fundamental aspect of their company in response.
5x5 A major figure is struck with remorse for earlier actions and considers stepping down or atoning in some painful and costly way.
6: ANGER
2x6 Two companies stumble into open conflict over some minor slight.
3x6 Internal strife in a company due to bruised egos and bloated sense of self-esteem.
4x6 Someone feels slighted and harbors a terrible grudge. He/she Plots horrific vengeance .
5x6 A company´s rank and file is furious at another Company over something, and will not heed their own Leadership. This creates an open conflict neither companys leaders want.
7: HAPPENSTANCE
2x7 An important feast day or celebration is coming up.
3x7 An important personage faces a public challenge to his/ her skill or ability.
4x7 Someone arrives. A demagogue, prophet, exiled king or other person that might affect the local power balance arrives in town.
5x7 A new Company is established; some group or cabal grow strong enough to become a new Company, although still a very weak one..
8: EMBARRASMENT
2x8 A major figure is embarrased by apparent lack of poise, knowledge or discression.
3x8 A company or figure fails publicly to meet its comittments,creating a dangerous impression of insolvency.
4x8 An established fact (longstanding treaty, marriage, etc) is revealed to have embarrasing, previously-unknown sides which will damage its value.
5x8 An outright defeat puts a major figure or Company in danger of collapse.
9: VANITY
2x9 Flattery or desire for approval makes an individual agree to a detrimental arrangement.
3x9 An important individual is goaded into a duel or conflict he is unlikely to survive.
4x9 Company spends vital resources on luxuries rather than neccesities.
5x9 An important leaders´ delusions of grandeur causes him to take very dangerous actions.
0: FATE
2x0 A fad or trend is born; there is money or social approval to be made by those who catch it at the right moment..
3x0 Accident. An important asset or individual is endangered by an accident.
4x0 Calamity. A fire, bad weather or other disaster ravages several Companies´ assets. (and the population, of course..)
5x0 Disaster A sandstorm/ tsunami, insurrection or invasion threatens the nation/duchy.
Loose dice-Upper classes
1 A heirloom jewel of great significance goes missing.
2 An affair is in danger of being revealed.
3 A very important foreign noble visits.
4 A major noble shows an exessive level of compassion with the poor.
5 A master artist arrives. To become her patron would be a social coup.
6 An ancient diary is rumored to undermine the title of a major noble.
7 Proficiency with some obscure weapon or language becomes fashionable.
8 A noble insists on starring in the play he has financed.
9 A major court figure erects a fantasy pavillion, portraing the land of the gods, pastoral idylls or a scary vision of hell.
0 A major figure is burdened by the arrival of a family of destitute, uncouth relatives.
Loose dice / Lower classes
1 A noble will hold a free banquet for the poor.
2 A foolish young beggar steals an expensive riding horse on impulse.
3 A renowned artisan dissapears.
4 Nomads/gypsies pass through.
5 A low dive gets a new cook, who is so good even the rich begin to visit.
6 Bug racing becomes popular.
7 A small-time merchant lands a staggeringly valuable deal.
8 A tremendously popular minstrel makes derogatory ditties about people for money.
9 The teenage child of a poor shoemaker grows to be staggeringly beautiful, inspiring love, lust and jealousy in many quarters.
0 A pregnant servant girl claims the childs father is a major figure, and demands he support the infant.
Loose Dice / Strange events
1 A strange creature is spotted shuffling around the streets at night.
2 A corpse goes missing before the funeral.
3 A travelling apothecary offers dramatic elixirs to a select few.
4 A famed cursed opal arrives is the dutchy..
5 A new kind of vine spreads, endangering food crops.
6 A crappy poets latest verses appear to be prophetic.
7 A new religious sect demands the right to conduct weird baptism and funeral rites.
8 A statue or monument changes inperceptibly every night.
9 People in all walks of life seem to have the same dream.
0 It is prophesied that the death of a crook slated for execution next week heralds the end of the world.
Loose Dice / Criminal circles
1 A notorious criminal escapes from jail.
2 A heinous crime is comitted, so bad even other criminals are appalled.
3 A new criminal or gang is created.
4 A mastermind recruits burglars and thugs for a big score.
5 A local gang boss is robbed.
6 A small gang is killed to the last man.. and nobody know by who.
7 A gang boss has a change of heart and renounces crime, becoming a monk.
8 A successful gang tries to take over a legitimate merchant house.
9 A burglar is injured, and has to hide in the house he burgled. His accomplices desperately seek a trick to sneak him out.
0 Criminals stumble across an opportunity to blackmail the Duke..
I agree-
and using waste dice to identify affected factions could also soak up some of theloose dice in a 10d pool.
But it would be good to also have some waste dice for random events.
I considered evens for random events and odds for factions, but that won´t work- it might generate too few factions, or too many (or even none).
