![]() Francisco “Frank” or “Paco” Suarez was raised in Boyle Heights, California. He joined the US Army in 1964, both to get technical training and out of patriotism. He became a heavy equipment operator, but decided to attend college and becoming a civil engineer after his discharge. His powers activated when he was walking back to his base down a lonely desert road at night after a car he had borrowed from a friend broke down. Frank suddenly heard the sound of squealing brakes behind him, and then the car appeared directly in front of him, straightened out, and drove away. Sombra can become invisible and insubstantial, but only from behind. He does this by creating a slightly larger than man-sized opening to another dimension, and “carry” it around like a cloak. Those in front of him cannot see this opening, and he looks normal to them, but he is both invisible and insubstantial to anyone behind him. Sombra can walk through walls and other barriers, but only by backing into them, and he cannot see where he is going. And the only way that he can sink through a floor is by dropping flat on his back. When intangible he can walk on air, and slowly float vertically when in a horizontal position. The only way he can approximate true 360 degree invisibility is to face a wall or other more or less flat surface and get as close as he possibly can. Sombra is afraid of fully entering the Dark Dimension, and has no idea what conditions are like in there, or if he could leave once he enters it; it is also very dark in there of course, and he lacks the ability to see in pitch darkness. He can expand the opening several inches at will, and has learned how to rapidly change the size of this aperture. When doing this he appears surrounded by a pulsing, eerie and very intimidating dark aura. This pulsing aura feels good to Sombra psychologically, and acts like a security blanket, boosting his Cool. Frank can also pull and shape the darkness from the Dark Dimension. He can use it to partially or fully cover himself by creating such a mask, clothing, or a close-fitting cloak out of darkness. By doing this, Frank can also make himself look like a man-shaped pool of darkness – and one only visible and tangible when seen from the front. Sombra has been conceived of as being active during the turbulent 1970s in the L.A.’s Mexican-American community. Frank isn’t really interested in becoming a superhero, but has sometimes found himself in a position where he could make a difference. He’s gathered evidence related to abuse of Mexican-Americans by the LAPD and given it to reporters sympathetic to the community. He’s scared a few young people straight and struck fear into the hearts of a few predators as Sombra. Mostly he wants to spend time with family and friends, develop his skills as an engineer, and advance professionally.
