This is the journal of a 15 year old girl named Megan. It is badly burnt on its covers and around the edges, as though somebody tossed it onto a fire that petered out before it could entirely consume the little book. In spite of the scorching, the entries are at least 80% legible. The journal begins with a few unremarkable entries in which Megan details her thoughts and experiences as an ordinary high school freshman. Apparently, her interest in the journal wanes rapidly, and soon many weeks pass without an entry. Then a long series of very strange entries begin.

Megan begins to write about the "ghost lights" seen at night up on nearby Sharp's Mountain. Some of her friends have seen them as well. They decide to make a Sunday afternoon hike to the area where the lights have been observed. They discover the foundations of an old stone house in the approximate location of the phenomenon. One of them has the idea of returning on a later occasion with a ouija board. Thus begins a long series of entries which claim to record ouija sessions with a sprit dwelling amidst the ruins.

The spirit identifies itself as Ptalkwan, and claims to have become trapped in the old house due to the actions of the previous owner. Exactly what that act was is never specified. Over many ouija sessions, Ptalkwan introduces the group to many strange concepts. Sometimes communication with Ptalkwan simply trails off into the same gibberish repeated over and over like a chant or mantra. Other times, Ptalkwan concludes a session by falling abruptly silent. It appears that the interval between sessions is three or four days on average.

Eventually, Ptalkwan instructs the teens to take part in a ritual which it claims will free him from the old ruin. Ptalkwan instructs them to return on the evening of the next full moon with 9 candles so that the ritual may begin. There the journal ends, leaving only blank pages.

A Library Use roll will turn up an old newspaper account of the disappearance of one of the teenagers mentioned in the journal. Doris Galer was a classmate of Megan. She vanished on the night of the next full moon after Megan's last journal entry. Her friends were either unwilling or unable to provide any information regarding her whereabouts that night. If the investigators look into the "ghost light" phenomenon, they will learn that it has not been seen since.
