The Turner Codex is a translation of a series of pictograph engraved copper sheets of Mayan origin, translated by Maplethorpe Turner in the late 1800's. Turner, who had discovered the codex in Guatemala, published 1000 copies of his translation in 1902. The translation took eleven years (1891-1902), but the academic community comletely snubbed both book and author. The original plates were destroyed in a fire in 1919, some time after Turner's death. Today, most copies of the Turner Codex have been destroyed, damaged beyond repair, or have simply disappeared.
